Ingredients (2–3 servings)

  • 500–700g ground beef (80–90% lean)
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

For the gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced and roughly chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1½ cups milk
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • A pinch of ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional topping:

  • ½–1 cup shredded cheese (Monterey Jack or your choice)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions
In a bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined—avoid overmixing to keep the meat tender.

Shape the mixture into oval patties, about the size of your palm and not too thick so they cook evenly.

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a small amount of oil. Sear the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side until nicely browned. They don’t need to be fully cooked yet. Remove and set aside.

In the same pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook until soft and translucent. Stir in the garlic and mushrooms, cooking until the mushrooms release their liquid and it evaporates.

Sprinkle in the flour and stir well, cooking for about a minute until it smells slightly nutty. Slowly whisk in the beef broth, followed by the milk, stirring continuously to create a smooth gravy.

Add onion powder, a pinch of nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Continue stirring until the gravy thickens.

Transfer the gravy to a baking dish and place the seared patties on top, nestling them into the sauce. Spoon a little gravy over each patty.

Sprinkle cheese on top if using. Cover with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F) for 40–45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 5 minutes until slightly golden on top.

Serve hot with your favorite sides.

Notes or Tips

  • Don’t overwork the meat when mixing—this keeps the patties juicy.
  • Searing adds flavor, so don’t skip that step.
  • Stir the gravy constantly while adding milk to avoid lumps.
  • You can skip the cheese for a more traditional version.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Give this comforting meal a try—it’s simple, hearty, and full of flavor. If you make it, share what sides you paired it with or how you made it your own!
